Who can install Starlink on a fishing vessel: certified integrator vs. DIY
There is a substantial difference between installing Starlink on a leisure boat and doing it on a working one. On the first, a poor installation is an inconvenience. On the second, it means a vessel tied up in port, a VMS that is not transmitting, and an awkward conversation with the insurer.
The hardware is identical whoever fits it. What changes the outcome is the craft of whoever carries out the work, and in the fishing sector that criterion matters more than in any other marine segment.
Starlink has no official installers
The starting misconception is worth clearing up: SpaceX does not accredit, train or authorise any company as a naval Starlink installer. There is no certification programme, no official list and no badge the company grants.
SpaceX sells the terminal and the service plan. Everything that happens between the box and your vessel’s deck falls outside its scope.
So when a company advertises itself as an “official Starlink installer”, it is using a label nobody awarded it. That does not necessarily make it a poor firm, but the term does not mean what it appears to.
What should actually be sought
The useful criterion is a different one: a marine electronics integrator with a demonstrable record in the fishing fleet. A company that was already fitting VMS units, sounders, radar and communications systems on working boats before Starlink existed.
The difference is decisive. Installing Starlink on a fishing vessel is not a Starlink problem: it is a marine electronics problem in a harsh environment. Continuous vibration from a 300 to 800 hp engine, permanent salinity, working decks where gear and catch are handled, and coexistence with equipment on which regulatory compliance depends.
An installer who comes from the leisure world may do impeccable work on a yacht and fall short on a trawler, simply because the loads and the environment are not the same.
The three risks specific to a working boat
1. VMS continuity
This is the one that costs the most. The VMS transponder is mandatory and remains so whether or not you install Starlink. What can happen is that a badly conceived installation interferes with the VMS antenna, or that something is left improperly closed when reconfiguring the network so the VMS transmits over IP via Starlink.
An interruption in VMS transmission is not a technical nuisance: it is a breach with enforcement consequences. Any integrator about to touch a fishing vessel’s network must know exactly what depends on the VMS before moving a cable.
2. The cost of downtime
On a leisure boat, if the installation runs a day over, nothing happens. On a fishing vessel, every day in port outside the schedule carries a direct cost: the trip not made, the crew standing idle, the ice bought.
That is why planning matters as much as execution. An integrator experienced with fleets schedules the work to fit into a stop already planned — unloading, gear change, survey — rather than generating a new one.
3. Insurance
If the vessel has professional activity, an undocumented installation complicates any claim related to the equipment or to water ingress through the deck. Insurers ask who carried out the work and with which materials. Without documentation, the owner’s position is weak.
When DIY is reasonable
It would not be honest to argue that nothing should ever be fitted oneself. There are clear cases:
Inshore vessel with a non-permanent mount. A compact terminal on a removable base aboard a 6 to 10 metre boat that goes out and returns the same day, with no deck penetration. Here DIY is the right call.
Seasonal use with removal. If the equipment goes on for the campaign and comes off afterwards, and requires no drilling, it is perfectly viable.
An owner with the trade. If you are a marine electrician, have made deck penetrations and know a polyurethane sealant from a silicone one, you do not need anyone to do it for you.
When it turns out expensive
The calculation inverts with any of these factors:
Deck penetration. A badly executed gland does not fail on day one: it seeps for months until it reaches the core. On a working boat, moreover, the deck takes loads and knocks that accelerate the problem.
Offshore or distant-water fishing. Continuous vibration and dynamic loads subject the mount to forces that do not exist in port. A mount that is correct alongside can start working loose two hundred miles out, and there is nobody to call.
Interaction with VMS, AIS or sounder. It is not enough for Starlink to work: you have to ensure everything else keeps working as before.
Vessels with commercial insurance or finance. Documentation stops being optional.
The cost nobody calculates
The honest comparison is not “professional installation” against “zero euros”. It is “professional installation” against “materials + your time + the probability of redoing it + the cost of unplanned downtime”.
Redoing an installation on a fishing vessel means stripping out, plugging and repairing the earlier penetrations, and immobilising the boat again. That second opportunity cost is the one that almost never enters the calculation.
Eight questions before signing

Will you look at the boat before quoting me? If the answer is no, keep looking.

Have you worked on fishing vessels before? A yacht is not a trawler. Ask for specific references in the segment.

How do you guarantee VMS continuity during and after the installation? There should be a technical answer, not a “we don’t touch it”.

What sealant will you use on the deck penetrations? Polyurethane or polysulphide. If they say silicone, end the conversation.

Will you fit an interior backing plate? On sandwich decks, yes. On steel, they should explain how they resolve the penetration and its corrosion protection.

How do you size the power supply? They should ask about your installation, your alternator and your generator before answering.

Can you fit into an already scheduled stop? This is the question that saves the most money.

What documentation do you provide? Speed test, obstruction check, photographs of the penetrations before sealing and a signed handover record.
A solid integrator answers all eight without discomfort.
Fleet installations
When several vessels are involved the approach changes. It is worth standardising hardware and configuration across the fleet: it simplifies support, allows common spares to be held, and means any skipper can operate the system even when moving between boats.
It is also worth staggering installations so they do not coincide with peak season, and documenting each vessel separately even where the configuration is identical.
